Nomovok, the leading developer of MeeGo operating systems, today announced the release of Steelrat, their optimized version of Tizen suitable for commercial implementation. Steelrat is a 100% Tizen compliant operating system designed to allow manufacturers to rapidly develop high-performance Tizen-based devices. Steelrat is also optimized for many popular ARM chipsets and can save manufacturers months of work to bring Tizen devices to market.
According to Pasi Nieminen, Nomovok CEO, "Steelrat is the culmination of years of work to create a commercially-ready version of MeeGo. Steelrat shortens the time to market for handset and tablet manufacturers and delivers excellent performance in critical areas such as graphics and power management. It offers the most comprehensive set of Tizen development and optimization tools and we are continuing its expansion into new areas particularly extending support for HTML5 development."
Nieminen continued, “We’re delighted to join with Intel and the other companies who have formed this new consortium to take Tizen to the next level. As an open source project Tizen relies on many individuals and companies working together and contributing to the project and this new group forms the basis of a global Tizen community. Tizen is different from earlier mobile operating systems – it’s 100% open source and will always be 100% open source.
“Tizen provides a perfect counterbalance to the other closed ecosystems – and Android which is not as open as it used to be. Device manufacturers can be assured that there will always be a completely open version of Tizen and that it cannot be monopolized by any of their competitors. Our Steelrat extensions allow them to create different user-experiences so that all Tizen devices won’t look the same. Lack of product differentiation is a major problem for Android and Windows Phone licensees but with our Steelrat environment operators, device manufacturers and even end users can build their own user experience and ecosystem – while still remaining 100% Tizen compliant.”
